The Benefits of Pelvic Wands for Chronic Pelvic Pain

The Benefits of Pelvic Wands for Chronic Pelvic Pain

By Heather Florio, CEO Desert Harvest

Nearly 25 million Americans and 25% of the world’s population (both men and women) suffer from chronic pelvic pain. Chronic Pelvic Pain can be caused by a variety of conditions such as Endometriosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Interstitial Cystitis (IC) or Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS), Myofascial Pelvic Pain Syndrome (MFPPS), Dyspareunia, and many others.

Due to the complex anatomy of the pelvis, and the overlapping interaction with other parts of the body, the musculoskeletal system remains a mostly untapped mystery in the medical community. Because of the intricate nature of the pelvis and its interaction with almost every other part of the body, it can be a source of pain and link to pain in other parts of the body as well. According to Ingrid Harm-Ernandes, P.T., W.C.S., and author of How to Solve Your Pelvic Floor Symptoms

“For a long time, this was the norm throughout the medical community: pelvic conditions like pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, constipation, and pain during sex were treated almost exclusively by looking for problems with the organs and hormones associated with the pelvis. Besides hormonal changes, though, there is another quite common cause of pelvic floor pain that a typical examination of the vaginal tissues overlooks: weak or tight pelvic floor muscles. For example, due to the extra downward pressure on your pelvic floor during pregnancy, the muscles can become weaker leading to symptoms like leaking urine (incontinence) or organ prolapse (when the muscles and tissues of the pelvis cannot support your organs). And in some cases, those weakened muscles can become overworked and can actually overcompensate, in turn becoming overly tight. That tightened pelvic floor, unfortunately, can absolutely cause pelvic pain and/or pain during sex. Also, if you are healing from tearing, an episiotomy, or a c-section, scar tissue may restrict muscle action and ability as well as restrict actual tissue mobility (the tissues lose elasticity). All of these conditions have a pelvic floor muscle connection.”

While there is still much to be explored on the various causes and intricacies, one promising avenue that is gaining recognition is the use of pelvic wands.

What is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and How Do Pelvic Wands Work?

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction is often characterized by a tightening of the pelvic floor muscles to guard against the pain radiating to the groin, hips, genitals, and beyond.  Pelvic floor dysfunction can be caused by many things, including inflammation, irritated nerves, restricted blood flow, pushing or straining to urinate, and is aggravated by conditions like  Interstitial Cystitis (IC/BPS), prostatitis, vulvodynia, vaginismus, pudendal neuralgia, lichen sclerosus and dyspareunia (painful sex). Some patients have found that pelvic wands can help to essentially release and retrain these muscles that may be overcompensating due to injury, nerve damage, pain, and structural issues. By using a wand, individuals can apply pressure to specific trigger points, releasing tension and promoting relaxation in the pelvic region. This precision allows for a personalized and controlled self-care experience. The gentle massage and pressure applied by pelvic wands contribute to improved blood circulation in the pelvic area. Enhanced blood flow may help to alleviate inflammation and promote healing.

The EZMagic Pelvic Wand

The world’s first pelvic wand, the EZMagic, was developed by an IC/BPS patient, Iliana Brockman, looking for more support outside of the therapy office. Her design became the baseline on which all other wands are based.

Pelvic wands are used to massage and relieve internal trigger points gently. They can be used both by a pelvic health physiotherapist and at home to help with pelvic floor muscle release and massage. Unlike other models made from silicone, EZMagic Pelvic Wands are made from non-porous, hypoallergenic, medical-grade borosilicate glass and can be heated or cooled. This virtually unbreakable composition allows for a more sanitary model and easier clean-up that lasts for years.

Silicone wands are porous and can hold bacteria even after they are cleaned with soap and water. Men and women alike can use the wands internally (vaginally or rectally) and externally to relax and re-educate pelvic floor muscles.

When asked about the experience with the pelvic wand, here’s what Iliana Brockman, IC/BPS patient and founder of the EZMagic Wand, had to say:

The top thing women say is that they can have sex without pain again—if your pelvic muscles are tight and expecting pain out of anything that touches you, those muscles will contract. Patients say they no longer expect pain after a course of physical therapy, thus alleviating their anxiety at the thought of sexual intimacy. The majority of men are thrilled to get back to their favorite sports and daily activity.
